Stanton School’s Day of Service

Stanton School’s Day of Service

Although the skies were overcast in Fox Lake on September 23, nothing could put a damper on Stanton School’s 2nd Annual Day of Service.  Mr. Sefcik, Stanton’s Principal, along with the entire staff and student body spent the day giving back to their community.

Mr. Sefcik developed The Day of Service not only as a way to raise funds for the District’s PTA, but to give his students an opportunity to serve in their community and grow as individuals.  The Day of Service is similar to a walk-a-thon, but instead of students collecting pledges to walk, they collect pledges for their involvement in a community service project.  According to Mr. Sefick, “One of the benefits of this event is that 100% of the pledges raised go directly to the district’s PTA, which will benefit every child at Lotus and Stanton School”.

During the kick-off assembly, Mr. Sefcik challenged his students to raise $20,000.00 and if they met his challenge, he would dye his beard purple and allow the students to duct tape him to the wall.  On September 26, Mr. Sefcik stayed true to his word and the 145 students who raised close to $23,000.00 had the pleasure of duct taping their principal to the wall.

The Day of Service also received support from generous sponsors.  Thank you to Ray Autogroup, Kiesgen’s American Family Insurance, W. Brothers Roofing, Guardian Material Handling, Dam, Snell & Taveirne, Ltd., Contractors Flooring, The Clinton Family Fund, Benny’s Service Center, Dockers Restaurant and Lounge, Garber Fox Lake Toyota, Paradise Jewelry and Treasures, Diamond Deli and Wine, and Drs. Sellke & Reily.

As an added bonus, students who collected at least $200.00 in pledges will have the opportunity for an additional service opportunity and cultural learning experience when they travel with Mr. Sefcik to Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood in October.  To celebrate their accomplishments, the students, staff, and volunteers ended their gratifying day with a picnic full of fun and games.  Rain or shine, every day is a great day at Stanton School, but The Day of Service is just a little extra special.
